A dental implant is placed in a single appointment, but the full process, including healing time before the crown goes on, usually takes a few months rather than one visit.
Here is the actual sequence. First, planning: deciding exactly where the implant needs to sit, based on your bone and the tooth being replaced. Then the implant fixture itself is placed, which is the surgical part, done under local anaesthesia.
After that comes the part patients do not always expect: waiting. The bone needs time to integrate around the titanium fixture, a process called osseointegration, before it is strong enough to support a crown. That is usually a few months, and it varies by site in the mouth and by how you heal.
Once healing is confirmed, the final crown goes on top, shaped and shaded to match your other teeth. From that point it functions like the tooth you lost. You chew on it, you do not think about it.
